BFT Gate Motor Replacement: The Fort Worth Owner’s Guide

Most BFT gate motor replacements in Fort Worth run between $850 and $1,600 installed, depending on the exact model and how much of the arm, bracket, and wiring needs to come along with it. We stock BFT-compatible motors on our trucks, so many swaps happen the same day we diagnose the failure. This isn’t a guess-and-swap job for us – we match the motor to your specific board revision and gear ratio, because BFT changed internal specs between series more often than most owners realize.

What usually brings a Fort Worth homeowner to this page is a gate that stopped mid-swing, a control board throwing a fault code, or a motor that hums but won’t turn the leaf. Sometimes the failure is the motor itself. Just as often, the motor gets blamed for what’s actually a limit switch, capacitor, or control board issue. Before we quote a replacement, we check the whole chain – because replacing a $900 motor when a $40 capacitor was the culprit is the kind of thing that gives the trade a bad name.

Relevant for owners across Fort Worth neighborhoods like Wedgwood, Ridglea Hills, Tanglewood, Park Glen, and the areas near TCU where we’ve worked on plenty of BFT-powered driveway and pedestrian gates.

Which BFT Models This Applies To

BFT has been building gate automation since the 1980s, and over that span they’ve issued several motor families that look alike from the outside but differ internally. The main ones we replace in Fort Worth are the Deimos BT A600/A800 series, the Phobos N/A line (often found on swing gates installed in the 2008 to 2016 window), the Icaro and Sub underground motors, and the Kustos BT A25 motors on light pedestrian gates. Sliding gate setups frequently use the Rigel 5 or Rigel 6 with a separate gearbox that also has its own part number.

Identifying your exact motor comes down to two things: the nameplate label on the motor housing and the control board revision in the enclosure. The label gives you the series and torque class (for example, A600 versus A800 refers to the force rating). The board revision matters because BFT changed connector pinouts and encoder feedback loops between board generations. A motor that physically bolts in but doesn’t communicate correctly with an older or newer board will fault out on the first cycle. We check both before ordering or pulling a replacement off the truck.

On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question, our honest position after fifteen years of this work: for BFT, we install genuine BFT replacement motors the large majority of the time. The aftermarket equivalents for BFT are spottier than for brands like LiftMaster or Mighty Mule – tolerances on the encoder disk and the limit cam can be just loose enough to cause intermittent faults that no amount of board adjustment resolves. If a quality aftermarket equivalent exists for your specific model, we’ll tell you and quote you both numbers. If it doesn’t, we’ll tell you that too and explain why.

We’re an independent gate repair company – not affiliated with BFT, but factory-trained on their equipment and familiar with the specific failure patterns we see in north Texas.

Signs Your BFT Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing

  • The gate moves slower than it used to, especially in one direction. This often means a motor winding is degrading or dragging under load. On swing gates, one direction puts more strain on the motor than the other, so the slowdown shows up there first.
  • You hear a humming sound but the leaf doesn’t move. The motor is getting power but the capacitor isn’t kicking it over, or the gear teeth inside the housing have stripped. The capacitor is cheap. The stripped gear means a motor replacement.
  • The control board shows a fault code that won’t clear. BFT boards throw specific numeric codes for overcurrent, encoder loss, or limit failure. A motor that’s drawing too much current will trip the board repeatedly, even after a reset.
  • The gate opens but stops at random positions instead of the set limits. On BFT motors with magnetic limit switches, a failing encoder or worn limit mechanism sends confused position data back to the board. The board doesn’t know where the gate is, so it stops.
  • You smell a hot electrical odor after the gate runs. Motor windings getting too hot is a fire risk and a hard stop. Turn the gate off at the breaker and call us. We’ll come inspect before the next cycle makes it worse.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s how BFT gate motor replacement pricing breaks down for Fort Worth area homes, based on the work we’re quoting most weeks:

  • Pedestrian gate motor (Kustos BT A25 or similar): $850 to $1,100 installed
  • Swing gate motor, single leaf (Deimos BT A600/A800, Phobos N): $1,050 to $1,350 installed
  • Swing gate motor, dual leaf: $1,750 to $2,400 installed for both sides
  • Sliding gate motor (Rigel 5/6 class): $1,100 to $1,600 installed
  • Capacitor replacement (if that’s all it is): $90 to $160 installed

The range exists because no two Fort Worth gates are in the same shape. A motor mounted on a rusted bracket with a warped gate leaf takes longer to align and adjust than one on a straight, well-maintained gate. What you get with every quote from us: the exact part price, the labor, and any needed brackets or wiring – all in writing before any work starts. No open-ended hourly billing. The swap itself typically takes two to three hours on-site, and the work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If it isn’t right, we make it right.

DIY or Call Us?

We understand the appeal of a weekend fix, and there are two things an owner can safely do before calling anyone. First, check the breaker or GFCI feeding the gate – a tripped breaker accounts for a healthy number of “dead motor” calls. Second, look at the manual release and confirm the gate itself swings or slides freely. If the gate binds against a post or drags a wheel, no new motor will fix that, and you just saved yourself a service call.

Past that point, BFT motor work involves mains voltage, control board diagnostics, and sometimes a heavy gate leaf that can pinch or fall if the old motor is removed incorrectly. We’ve seen owners swap a motor, bolt everything back together, and then chase an intermittent fault code for a month because the encoder alignment was off by a few degrees. That’s not a knock on anyone’s mechanical skill; it’s just what these motors demand. We’re glad to handle the full replacement, from diagnosis to final limit adjustment. Call (682) 841-5749 and we’ll get you scheduled.
