BFT Access Control Installation: The Fort Worth Owner’s Guide

BFT access control installation in Fort Worth typically runs between $450 and $1,150 installed, depending on the specific BFT keypad, card reader, or intercom model you need and the condition of the existing gate operator wiring. We stock BFT-compatible access control parts on our trucks and can usually match your system the same week. The typical call we get starts with a keypad that intermittently won’t open the gate, or a card reader that worked fine for five years and suddenly doesn’t respond at all.

Most BFT access control systems fail gradually. You’ll notice the keypad works from one side but not the other, or the remote opens the gate but the keypad doesn’t. That’s the control board or the access module losing communication with the operator, not the gate itself. By the time you’re searching for a fix, the problem has usually been building for a few weeks.

Which BFT Models This Applies To

BFT makes a few access control families, and they are not interchangeable. The main ones we install and service in Fort Worth are the BFT TAK (keypad with display), BFT MITTO entry keypads, BFT ROBO wall-mounted readers, and the BFT LEONARDO radio-based modules. There’s also the BFT STOPPY post-mounted keypad that many neighborhoods in the TCU area use for pedestrian gates.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha we run into constantly: the TAK and MITTO look similar on the outside, but they speak different protocols to the control board. If you have an older BFT operator from before roughly 2015, it may not accept the newer MITTO or ROBO without a compatibility module. We always check the operator model number on the side of the control box before we order or install anything. Look for the silver BFT sticker with the model, voltage, and serial number, usually on the inside of the housing.

As for OEM vs aftermarket, for BFT access control specifically we usually recommend OEM. The aftermarket keypads sold online are often universal and don’t always carry the BFT communication pulse properly, especially on older boards. We stock genuine BFT-compatible parts, and when an aftermarket equivalent works reliably we’ll tell you and price it accordingly. We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with BFT, so we don’t push one option over another, we’ll tell you what actually works.

Signs Your BFT Access Control Installation Is Failing

  • Keypad works intermittently or only when pressed hard. The membrane or buttons are worn, or moisture has gotten into the housing. In Fort Worth’s climate, the expansion and contraction from hot afternoons to cool nights pulls seals loose over time.
  • Card reader lights up but won’t release the gate. The reader is getting power, but the data line to the control board is corroded or disconnected. We find this a lot after thunderstorms when water follows the low-voltage wire inside conduit.
  • You hear the keypad beep but the gate doesn’t move. That’s usually not the keypad at all. The access control is sending the signal, but the operator’s limit switch or control board isn’t triggering the motor. Good news: your keypad may be fine, and the fix is in the operator.
  • Two or more buttons do nothing at all. Water intrusion is the usual culprit. BFT keypads are weather-resistant, not waterproof. After a few hard Fort Worth seasons, condensation can short out entire rows of keys.
  • Gate opens on its own or won’t close fully. A failing access control module can send phantom signals to the operator, especially if a card reader has been exposed to sprinkler overspray. The gate isn’t haunted, the reader is just dirty and shorting.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For BFT access control installation in Fort Worth, here’s the price picture. A basic keypad replacement with existing wiring runs $450 to $650. A keypad plus a new reader module or compatibility board runs $650 to $900. A full access control setup with keypad, reader, gooseneck pedestal, and trenching or new conduit starts around $900 and can go to $1,150 depending on the distance from the gate to the power source.

The parts share of the job is usually $180 to $520, the labor is the rest. You’ll see the exact split in writing before we touch anything. That written price is not an estimate we revise after the work starts. It’s the price. The installation includes mounting, wiring, programming the codes or cards you need, testing with your existing operator, and walking you through how to add and remove users. All work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the installation isn’t right, we make it right, no argument and no fine print.

DIY or Call Us?

Access control runs on low voltage, usually 12 or 24 volts, so the shock risk is low. The bigger risk is spending money on the wrong part. You can safely check a few things yourself: whether the keypad gets power, whether the wire connections at the control board look corroded, and whether any fuses are blown on the operator. What you shouldn’t do is open the operator housing and start crossing wires. The operator has high-voltage incoming power for the motor, and getting into the wrong terminal can fry a $400 control board in about half a second.

We’ve also seen more than a few homeowners buy a universal keypad online, wire it up, and then call us when nothing opens. The universal pads don’t always match BFT’s communication protocol. By the time we replace it with the right part, the bill is higher than if we’d just done it first. If you’re not sure which part you need, call us at (682) 841-5749 and describe your system. We’ll tell you straight what it likely is, and you can decide from there.
