Get your free estimateElite Gate Motor Replacement: The Fort Worth Owner’s Guide
An Elite gate motor replacement in Fort Worth typically runs between $750 and $1,450 installed, depending on the motor’s horsepower, swing versus slide configuration, and whether the control board and receiver need to be swapped alongside it. In most cases, when you call us about a dead Elite gate, the motor itself has thermally overloaded, stripped its gears, or burned out the capacitor. We stock compatible Elite motors on our trucks for common residential swing arms and slide operators, so the replacement can often happen the same day.
What most homeowners notice first is not a failed motor outright. It’s a gate that opens halfway, then stops. Or one that hums but doesn’t move. Or a system that trips the breaker every time the remote gets pressed. By the time a motor reaches that point, it has usually been running on failing capacitors or worn gears for months. Cody Beckman, our owner, puts it this way: “Tell me what the gate is doing, and I’ll tell you what it needs – usually those are two different conversations.” A gate that hums isn’t telling you the motor is dead – it’s telling you the capacitor or the gear train is. The good news is Elite motors are modular enough that we don’t always have to replace every component.
Which Elite Models This Applies To
Elite has sold three primary residential motor families in the U.S. over the years: the SL series of slide gate operators, the CSW and C-1200 lines of swing gate arms, and the TS series for heavier tubular steel gates. The motor replacement path differs for each. Swing arms like the CSW200 use a 24V DC motor with an integrated gearbox, and there’s no easy way to replace the motor without the gearbox – they come as one assembly. Slide operators like the SL3000 and SL2000 have a more straightforward motor-and-chain or motor-and-belt setup, and the motor can be replaced independently.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most people learn the expensive way: an Elite swing arm motor will not interchange between the 120V AC and 24V DC versions, even when the mounting holes line up. The AC version depends on mechanical limit switches, while the DC version uses a rotational pulse counter built into the motor assembly. Swapping in the wrong voltage motor burns out the control board in a matter of seconds. We identify what’s on your gate before ordering or installing anything, which means checking the label plate on the motor body, not just the operator cover. And for Elite parts specifically, we carry OEM motors wherever possible, and quality aftermarket equivalents only when the OEM unit has a known weak point our suppliers have addressed. Elite discontinued several SL-series motors around 2017, and the aftermarket replacements for those legs often hold up better in Fort Worth’s heat than the original spec.

Signs Your Elite Gate Motor Is Failing
- Humming without movement. This almost always points to the start capacitor. The motor windings are still alive, but the capacitor that boots the rotor is dead. If you catch it at this stage, you may only need a capacitor swap rather than a full motor replacement.
- Gate stops, reverses, or reopens mid-cycle. Elite operators use a stall-force sensor tied into the motor’s current draw. A failing motor draws uneven current, which reads as an obstruction to the board. The motor gets blamed for what’s actually a sensor interpreting erratic resistance.
- Breaker trips only when the gate activates. Failing motor windings or a shorted capacitor can pull enough amps to throw a 15- or 20-amp breaker. It’s specific enough that if the breaker only trips when the remote is pressed, the motor circuit is the prime suspect.
- Burning smell or unusual heat from the operator housing. Elite motors run warm in a Texas August, but a distinct electrical-ozone smell or a housing too hot to hold your hand on is not normal operation. If you smell it, power down the operator at the breaker and call us.
- Manual operation is fine, but the motor turns slowly. The motor’s permanent magnet rotor on Elite DC units can demagnetize over years of heat cycling. In Fort Worth, where summers regularly push operators past 130°F internally, we see that failure more often than manufacturers’ lifespan charts would predict.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what we quote most often for Elite motor replacements in Fort Worth right now:
| Elite Motor Type | Typical Installed Range |
|---|---|
| SL-series slide operator motor (SL3000, SL2000) | $780 – $1,150 |
| CSW swing arm motor & gearbox assembly | $900 – $1,350 |
| TS-series heavy tubular swing motor | $1,050 – $1,450 |
| Capacitor-only replacement (when motor is still healthy) | $95 – $180 |
Every one of those numbers includes the part, the labor, and the calibration of limit and force settings after installation. You’ll see the exact figure in writing before any work starts, because we write every estimate down before we touch a wrench. The range depends mostly on whether we are also replacing the drive chain or belt, and whether the existing control board and remote receiver survives the motor swap. On most Elite jobs we can keep your existing remotes and keypad, which keeps the cost from creeping up.
Every motor replacement we do is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the motor we installed fails within a year, or the calibration isn’t right, we come back and make it right – no fine print, no pushing the responsibility to a manufacturer’s warranty claim. That’s on us.
DIY or Call Us?
There are a few things a capable Fort Worth homeowner can safely check before calling: whether the breaker is tripped, whether the motor hums or stays silent, and whether the gate opens by hand freely. Knowing those three answers helps us quote faster, and we’ll never discourage you from doing them. Electrical work on an Elite operator, though, is a different category. These units run on 120V AC or 24V DC power, and both involve wiring inside a metal cabinet. The AC operators especially carry live voltage even when the gate is idle. The capacitor in an Elite swing arm can hold a charge even after the breaker is off. We do not recommend opening the cabinet and probing around without training. If the issue is a dead capacitor, we may be able to swap it rather than replace the entire motor, but the diagnosis and the swap belong to a technician with the right meter and the right insulation practices. Call us at (682) 841-5749 and we’ll get eyes on it, usually the same day for most Fort Worth addresses.
FAQs
An Elite motor installed in Fort Worth typically lasts 8 to 12 years, with heat being the largest factor. Motors with shade or a cool-side orientation last noticeably longer than ones mounted in direct afternoon sun. Regular limit and force adjustment, which we can check during a visit, also extends motor life by preventing constant over-torque. If your Elite motor is older than a decade and failing, replacement is usually the better financial call over repair; call (682) 841-5749 and we’ll tell you straight which path makes sense.
Sometimes yes. Bad capacitors, worn drive belts, and misadjusted limit switches can all mimic motor failure and can often be repaired for a few hundred dollars or less. The point where repair stops making sense is when the motor’s windings are burned, the rotor has demagnetized, or the gearbox has stripped. We’ll open the unit, show you what we find, and give you the cost of both paths before we proceed with either one.
Most Elite slide and swing motor replacements take between 2 and 4 hours once we’re on site. The motor swap itself is usually under an hour. The rest of the time is spent setting limit stops, calibrating force sensitivity, syncing your existing remotes and keypad, and confirming the safety edges and photo eyes function correctly. We won’t leave until the gate opens and closes three consecutive full cycles without a fault.
Yes. We keep common Elite swing arm motor and gearbox assemblies, SL-series slide motors, and start capacitors stocked in our Fort Worth trucks. Less common parts, like TS-series motors for heavy tubular gates, might take a day or two to source from our local distributor. We also carry parts for other brands families own most often – LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls, among others – so if your gate has multiple operators we can handle them in one visit. Tell us your model number when you call and we’ll confirm our truck inventory before we head out.
